RIP Canadian Wheat Board
07 December 2011
Now that our Happy Planet mayor is back in the saddle for another term, we can be re-assured that we can continue to convert our front lawns to grow wheat. Even better news is that, since the House of Commons last week voted to end the Canadian Wheat Board's 76-year monopoly on the sale of wheat...

Piping Hot Real Estate?

Hal_Piping_CurlingThe glow of the Olympics hasn’t quite faded, as Hal gets set to pipe in another round of curling greats, this time for the Paralympics 2010. Yes, he’s getting time off for good behaviour.

Otherwise things are gradually getting back to normal around here.

The real estate market held its breath for the entire month of February, but came back with a vengeance as soon as the Olympic torch was snuffed. We are shaping up for one of our busiest months in quite a while. It’s hard to put one's finger on exactly why the real estate market is so hot. We are seeing a few first-time home buyers, but many of the new files seen to be new construction, with buyers rushing to beat the onslaught of the dreaded HST. Some of our commercial  clients are re-financing to lock in low interest rates, in expectation that rates will rise over the coming year.

Robust real estate sales however are not really a sign of a strong economy, as we are seeing a lot of distress sales, and court ordered foreclosure sales. Our foreclosure files all went dark during the Olympics, since they were all initiated out of the Vancouver registry (which, as you’ll remember, was locked down behind the Olympic security cordon), but they all came back to life in March. We were surprised to hear from our regular process server that they were backlogged, because of the large volume of foreclosure material they had to serve.

Sadly, it is also true that more people die this time of year, as evidenced by a spike in our estate and probate files.
