Last week marked the first anniversary of Vancouver's "Community Court", a radical re-think of the role of the Provincial Court, which, in the first instance, deals with all persons charged with criminal offences in the province.
I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with Judge Gove, the head of the court and chief cheerleader for this experimental programme, when he attended the Fraser Valley Bar Association's meeting several months ago, to brief us on the workings of the court, and I've been an enthusiastic supporter ever since.

One of my favourite characters, in one of my favourite books, once said "There is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats".
Well, effective September 15, 2009, it just got a bit harder to simply mess about with boats (any boat with an engine that is) - with the introduction of the Mandatory Power Craft Operators licence.
These licencing requirements have been eased in over the past few years, beginning with the requirement that all young boaters demonstrate their proficiency. Now the rules apply to us all, so whether you are churning up Cultus Lake with a Seadoo,

With the launch of our Wednesday Whines this week, I was forced to research some wineries on Vancouver Island.
Upon my return I expected many things, but not the astonishing revelation that a divorce order we filed electronically came back two MONTHS faster than a manually submitted one. We have been using Court Services Online, the BC court's electronic filing service, more and more over the past several months, but now we are converts for sure! It's awful when the divorce process lasts longer than the marriage, so we are grateful to the staff at Court Services Online for rolling out this new technology. So, for all your divorce needs, wine sharing and online technology queries, feel free to contact us. |

The Dutch courts today ruled that a 13-year-old girl, who wanted to become the youngest person to sail alone around the world, was "in need of protection" and was made a temporary ward of the court, pursuant to their child protection legislation.
We have to applaud and support this decision. As a recreational coastal sailor, who thus far has confined his adventures to the protected waters of the Salish Sea, the writer has scared himself silly more than enough times to realize the enormous physical and psychological challenges faced by solo circumnavigators. There are some things that just shouldn't be attempted by 13-year-olds.

Sometimes in the heat of battle I've been known to mutter under my breath "Is this guy for real?" referring, of course, to "my learned friend", an opposing counsel, who is behaving in a manner neither learned nor friendly.
(For those of you unfamiliar with the term, "my learned friend" is the mode of address legal etiquette requires us to adopt when referring to opposing counsel in court, just as we address the judge as "your lordship". So we might say, "M'lord, my learned friend is mistaken --" rather than "Yo, judge, that bozo doesn't know what he's talking about --". You get the picture.)
Well folks, my suspicions
