Governor General Designate with legal background
12 July 2010
It’s true, I am a bit disappointed I didn't get the call to be the new Governor General. It looks like a good gig: good salary, nice house, snappy uniform and access to an impressive wine cellar. It’s probably my own fault - I should have e-mailed the PM's office to let them know I was...

Harmonized sales tax - where on earth did this come from?

As recently as May 2009, the BC government declared categorically that it would not institute a harmonized sales tax regime, because an increase in the tax base would be unwarranted. Ha!

Like most of my colleagues at the bar, I have been a vocal long-time opponent of the discriminatory tax on lawyer's services. As anyone who has had the pleasure of paying a lawyer's bill knows, the profession has been singled out as the only

Chief Justice Brenner

We, at GreenWay, were sorry to hear of the resignation of Chief Justice Brenner. We suspect his greatest legacy will be his work in overhauling the rules of court. While the jury is still out on whether all of the reforms will produce the intended results, we applaud the fact that Chief Justice Brenner at least tried. As the old adage goes - the definition of insanity is continuously doing the same thing and expecting a different result, and our civil court system has felt like an asylum for quite awhile. Change was needed, so Kudos to the Chief for stirring the pot.

On a more personal note,

Well, our running shoes are packed, the 700 miles of training runs in rain, sleet and snow  are behind us, the fund-raising is all done, and we've been jabbed for tetanus, typhoid, yellow fever, cholera, e-coli and about half a dozen other exotic diseases...AND we're off!  Only 20 hours flying time to catch the twice-weekly plane that provides the only access to the world's most remote, inhabited island (population 3,000). We are amongst the 43-strong Team Diabetes members who will compete as part of an international field of 70 entrants in the Easter Island Marathon and Half Marathon. A hearty slap on the back to all of our friends, family and clients who made it all possible, by donating to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Regrettably, there will be no cell phone or internet access on our jaunt, so I will be completely unplugged from the office. Sigh.

We made it!

Three flights, 36 hours in the air and we made it to the starting line of the Easter Island marathon, along with 30 other crazy canucks, collectively having raised over $350,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Once again, our heartfelt thanks to all who donated.

It was the weirdest, wackiest race I have ever been crazy enough to participate in. For starters,

The long wait - trials on hold due to lack of judges

We had the pleasure recently of appearing for the first time before Mr. Justice Harvey, a former colleague from the New Westminster bar, who was recently appointed to the Supreme Court. Justice Harvey is one of a handful of appointments made recently by the Federal Minister of Justice, which includes the appointments of Justices Garson, Greyell, Hyslop and Schultes in British Columbia.

These welcome appointments still leave the BC Supreme Court bench under strength, and the strain is
