Like everybody else in the legal community I'm following with prurient interest the trials and tribulations of embattled associate chief justice of Manitoba, Lori Douglas, who was ousted by a disgruntled client of her husband's law firm. Nude photographs of her were posted, apparently without...

We, at GreenWay, were sorry to hear of the resignation of Chief Justice Brenner. We suspect his greatest legacy will be his work in overhauling the rules of court. While the jury is still out on whether all of the reforms will produce the intended results, we applaud the fact that Chief Justice Brenner at least tried. As the old adage goes - the definition of insanity is continuously doing the same thing and expecting a different result, and our civil court system has felt like an asylum for quite awhile. Change was needed, so Kudos to the Chief for stirring the pot. On a more personal note, while I was defending a client of the firm, I had an extended opportunity to watch Chief Justice Brenner in action. It was the largest leaky condo case in BC court history. Controlling a room full of the toughest litigators in the Province was no mean feat, and Chief Justice Brenner was invited to attend a two-day mediation just prior to the trial. His attendance brought a fresh perspective and I was impressed with his thoughtful, measured and intuitive approach along with his ability to grasp immediately the very complex legal matters that would be before Justice Williamson at the upcoming and very lengthy trial. I was even more impressed by Chief Justice Brenner's candid assessment of the situation and need to settle the matter before another year went by!
